Your car reads lane markings and the vehicle ahead through the windshield. Move the glass and you move the camera with it. Recalibration puts the aim back where the manufacturer set it, and it is part of the job rather than an upsell after the fact.

Why it is not optional

The camera is a ruler, and you just moved the zero

Guidance from the Auto Glass Safety Council puts it starkly. A camera off by a single degree is off by roughly eight feet at a hundred feet away. That is the distance between braking for the car in front and arriving at it.

The bracket moves

The camera mounts to the glass, not the roof. Different glass, different thickness, a bracket seated a fraction differently, and the aim has shifted before the car has left the driveway.

The glass itself matters

The camera looks through a specific optical window in the windshield. Distortion in cheap glass, or the wrong bracket position, changes what the camera sees even when the aim is right.

No warning light

This is the dangerous part. A miscalibrated system usually throws no fault at all. It just quietly misjudges distance, and you find out at the worst possible moment.

How it is done

Static, dynamic, or both, depending on what you drive

Manufacturers do not agree on method, so the vehicle decides, not us. What matters is following the procedure the manufacturer published for that model rather than picking whichever is quicker.

  • 01Static. The car sits on level ground and targets are positioned at measured distances in front of it. Needs space, level floor and controlled light, so it happens indoors.
  • 02Dynamic. The car is driven at a set speed on well marked road while the system relearns. Needs clear lane markings and decent weather.
  • 03Both. A growing number of vehicles want a static procedure followed by a road drive to confirm.

You get documentation showing the calibration completed and passed. Keep it. If the car is ever in a collision, that record matters.

Lane keep assist or lane departure warning. Both read the markings through the windshield.

Adaptive cruise holds a gap to the car ahead rather than a fixed speed. That gap is measured optically.

It brakes on its own

Automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning both depend on the camera reading distance correctly.

The high beams switch themselves

Automatic high beam dipping and traffic sign recognition are camera functions too, and both drift when the aim moves.
